Floral Embroidery - One Day Workshop

Join textile artist Lora Avedian in a one day workshop in the beautiful setting of the 18th century Townhouse right next to Spitalfields market in east London. Participants will learn botanical embroidery techniques, including how to create three-dimensional pleated flowers along side hand embroidery techniques. Lora will teach you a variety of classic embroidery and embellishment techniques and show you how she uses a variety of materials to create different quality of line, 3D relief and texture.

What will you learn?

In this workshop you will learn a variety of ways of using hand embroidery to create floral embellishment, inspired by Lora’s own work, you will learn some techniques for creating petals, centres, stems and leaves, some of which Lora showcases in her book Stitch in Bloom. You will learn some core embroidery stitches (couching, french knots, satin stitch, open chain stitch) and how you can use them with a variety of materials to produce different outcomes as well as some simple hand gathering techniques to create 3D flowers. Each participant will come away with a floral sampler and hopefully some new ideas and techniques to work with, all using hand embroidery. Participants may bring something they wish to embroider onto for example a napkin, unlined jacket, or fabric for a cushion cover.

Materials

Embroidery materials and tools will be provided by Lora and are included in the cost of the workshop although bringing your own materials and sewing kit is encouraged.

Full information will be sent out when tickets are purchased (Please check your spam!)

Location

Townhouse Spitalfields is a gallery and antique shop, located in an early eighteenth century building, opposite Hawksmoor’s church in Spitalfields. The gallery is in a small building behind the shop and specialises in 20th century art 1900 – 1960, mainly British. The workshop will take place in the dinning room above the shop, which is decorated sympathetically to the age of the house and gives you a feeling of having walked back in time.

There will be tea and coffee available but participants must organise their own lunch. There are many excellent places to eat locally in Spitalfields market and surrounding area of Brick Lane, participants are also welcome to go to the Town House cafe down stairs.

We look forward to welcoming you!
