This is one of a pair of original pieces by the artist Lora Avedian made in partnership with Smythson of Bond Street, shown at London Craft Week 2022. The artwork uses surplus Smythson leathers combined with Lora’s traditional embroidery techniques. Inspired by Japanese silk scroll paintings and ancient ceramics Lora researched at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Each shape is hand cut from Smythson Italian leather and machine stitched down by Lora using her freehand embroidery machine. The hanging depicts a bird flying in the sky above a patch of Dahlias and Japanese Chrysanthemums (giving a nod to the inspiration for the piece). Each flower has hand cut petals layered upon one another to create a three-dimensional flower effect. The Chrysanthemums have been curled to give a realistic quality. There are different levels of detail in the piece, if you look closely there is a small hand embroidered butterfly about to land on a Dahlia.

Dimensions: 120x55cm

Materials: Leather on off white Scottish woven linen, with additional rayon embroidery threads

Care: Keep out of continuous direct sun light to ensure colours do not fade, dust regularly. If you need to clean it, do not wash with water, contact a trained conservator.
