This is a one day workshop, taking place in person at the beautiful Porth-en-Alls, Prussia Cove in Cornwall. The embroidery class will be inspired by local Cornish flora and fauna that we will be surrounded by in the beautiful location. Lora will give you access to her materials and show you her tricks and tips to create a beautiful floral artwork. Students will work with a mixture of materials such as ribbons, braids, and threads to create joyful embroideries full of texture and colour. Lora will show you how to mount your work over mount board at the end of the class, ready to be framed.
Only basic sewing skills necessary for the class, but could also benefit people who are more experienced and would like to broaden their knowledge. Tea, coffee, snacks and lunch will be included in the ticket price and provided by a local chef using seasonal ingredients.
Techniques you will learn:
Couching stitch with braid and ribbon
Stitching with ribbons and tapes
3d-flowers with simple fabric manipulation techniques
A number of traditional embroidery stitches and their variations that work well for floral designs
Including but not limited to; French knot, blanket stitch, chain stitch, satin stitch, stem, running and back stitch
Workshop date: 28th April 2026
Workshop timing : 10am-5pm with 45 minute lunch break from 1-1:45pm, with tea and coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon
Day Schedule:
10:00: Meet at the entrance to Porth-en-Alls
10:00-10:30: Get settled into the room we will be working in and introduce ourselves, Lora will do a short introduction to her work and show some samples of the techniques we will be doing in the day.
10:30-11:00: Starting with looking at the flowers provided and the local landscape for inspiration, we will be doing a short drawing exercise, to get us looking at the details of the flowers.
11:00-11:15: Morning tea/coffee break
11:15-13:00: We will put down our pencils for the moment and pick up our embroidery needles. We will try out a selection of different embroidery techniques, and make a small sample with them. Thinking about the flowers and how we can express the different elements of them through our embroidery.
