              Carnations & Tulips Workshop
Date: Saturday 17th January 2026
Time: 10am - 4pm
Where: Lora’s studio, Fusion Arts Kingston. Closest train station Kingston-Upon-Thames, Greater London
This is a one day workshop is taking place in person in Lora’s studio building or in Lora’s studio itself depending on numbers. The class will bring together two of Lora’s signature techniques; couching with braid and three dimensional flowers. During the class each student will make a textile artwork consisting of the two techniques, using Lora’s smocking machine to pleat the fabric for the three dimensional flowers and hand couching a braid tulip design of your choice.
Only basic sewing skills necessary for the class, but could also benefit people who are more experienced and would like to broaden their knowledge.
Lora will give you access to her materials and show you her tricks and tips to create a beautiful three-dimensional floral artwork. In addition, you will get a short tour of Lora’s studio and she will show you her sample portfolio as part of the workshop.
Techniques you will learn:
Couching stitch with braid
How to use the hand smocking machine
How to create three-dimensional textile flowers with your pleated fabric.
Day Schedule:
10-10:30: Meet outside Lora’s studio building, go up to the space. Then we will get settled into the room we will be working in and introduce ourselves. There will also be time for a look around Lora’s studio and at her samples.
10:30-13:00: Introduction to Lora’s work, a look at samples, looking at materials, and techniques we will be learning. Starting with couched braid, and looking at how to create tulip designs. We will stitch out a favourite design either designed by you or using Lora’s pre-determined designs.
13:00-13:45: Lunch
14:00-15:45: The afternoon focuses on the 3D pleated flowers, and how to create our Carnations.
15:45-16:00: Show and tell and tidy up.
Transport: Located a 5 minute walk from Kingston overground station, with many car parks in the area, and bus stops just outside the door of the studio. More information will be sent closer to the time.
Accessibility note: The only way to access my studio space is via stairs, the lifts in the building are not working, therefore I cannot accommodate anyone who is unable to walk up several flights of stairs. Please accept my apologies about this!
Food: Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available through out the day, but lunch will not be provided. The studio is in the centre of Kingston with lots of options of places to eat for lunch. Lora can advise you on the day or you can bring your own packed lunch.
Materials : Although all basic materials will be provided for the workshop, you will receive an email once you have booked with the information you need including any additional materials you might like to bring once you have booked your place.
