Embroidered Lampshade Making Workshop
Date: Sunday 7th & Sunday 14th June 2026
Time: 10am - 4pm
Location: Lora’s studio, Fusion Arts Kingston. Kingston-Upon-Thames, Greater London
This two day workshop is taking place in-person over two consecutive weekends. This is a very special class because Lora Avedian will be teaching embroidery in the first class and her mum (lampshade expert) Ann Avedian will be teaching students how to attach the embroidered fabric to the lampshade and finish it to a high standard in the second class.
The embroidery will be an elegant white on white linen floral design and you will learn how to attach it to a 30cm wide lampshade hoop - which works perfectly for a pendant lamp.
The class is for people who already do a bit of embroidery or know how to sew to a basic level. It would suit someone who is interested in learning some of Lora’s embroidery techniques and how to apply them to a lampshade, creating something both beautiful and useful for your home.
Day 1 (with Lora):
We will be going through the different stitch techniques, looking at materials, thinking about how you can create texture and interest with white on white embroidery.
Embroidery stitches you will learn will include (but not limited to):
French knots
Couching
Back stitch
Chain stitch
Stitching with ribbon/braid
There will be a design that Lora has created to work from (see images), or you can create your own with the techniques and material given. Students can then take their embroidery away with them to work on through the week before the next class.
Day 2 (with Ann):
We will be learning how to make our fabric into a simple loose pendant lampshade.
Techniques you will learn:
Binding the hoop
Machine sewing of hems and join
Pinning and hand sewing your fabric to the hoop
Rough schedule for the days:
7th June: Day 1
10-10:30: Meet outside Lora’s studio building, go up to the space. Then we will get settled into the room we will be working in and introduce ourselves. There will also be time for a look around Lora’s studio and at her samples.
10:30-13:00: Working on sampling and then drawing out our designs onto the fabric. Starting our main embroideries.
13:00-14:00: Lunch
14:00-15:45: Embroidering onto our lampshade fabric
15:45-16:00: Show and tell and tidy up.
14th June: Day 2
10-10:30: Meet outside Lora’s studio building, go up to the space. Trouble shooting for embroidery and a look at the steps of how to put together your lampshade.

13:00-14:00: Lunch
14:00-15:45: Hand stitching our on our fabric to the hoop.
