Oak Leaf Cross Cushion - Oat & Green
For the Oak Leaf Cross cushion embroidery design Lora found inspiration in her research into an archive of folk drawings made by Pennsylvania Germans who lived in rural parts of southeastern Pennsylvania and the surrounding region in the 1700s and 1800s. Lora has joined the fabrics together in a way the evokes traditional quilting which she had been doing a lot of the year this collection was made and is a strong tradition in American textiles history.
The piece is embellished using a textile technique called applique to get the silhouettes of the leaf shapes. Theses are all cut by hand from antique cotton in a very dark navy blue miniature gingham and then embroidered around the edges to fix them in place using a freehand embroidery machine.
